I guess they do. Yesterday while out and about running errands, I was again reminded by pedestrians that my car should stop on a dime. People come to a cross walk and do! Hold everything people! You are missing an important and life saving step! Here it is, pay attention please. Before walking across the street, stop and look both ways before proceeding. I remember this training happening early for me around age 4. Perhaps that is part of the problem, we need a refresher on proper procedure on crossing. Just because you have arrived at the crosswalk does not mean an automatic go, unless of course your feeling lucky and want to see if your body can stop a car going 15 to 45 miles an hour. Let me know how that works out for you.
It scares the heck out of me to see adults teaching this technique to children. It appears to be a learned behavior and I am hoping that everyone stops showing children how to possibly get themselves killed. Not only are children shorter, so you can't see them coming as easily, but they are fast. Before you know it, one can be in front of your car going under and you don't know it has happened.
And for those of us behind the wheel, people, stop following so closley. I know I've picked up some bad habits from driving the commute I have. We don't leave enough space between cars anymore. We don't give ourselves enough time to stop if something does happen. Leave a few minutes early. As a friend of mine told me several years ago, drive to arrive.
Hope you are having a safe and happy Memorial Day Holiday.
